These images were generated as part of the initial detailed characterisation in the early 1980s of the F4/80 antibody as a marker for tissue macrophages using glutaraldehyde-fixed perfusion fixed tissues and paraffin sections (see original references below).   This method preserved the ramified processes of tissue macrophages and highlighted several populations that have since been studied in greater detail and the way that they spread along the basement membranes underlying epithelial and endothelial surfaces.  The original papers were published in black and white.  We now know that F4/80 does not label all macrophages, but these images highlight the abundance, location and morphology of tissue resident macrophages
